Located between Marseille and Cassis, the Luminy Science and Technology Park is niche location in a valley at the foot of Mont Puget, a short stroll from the Sugiton Calanque. With an area of 1000 hectares devoted to higher education and internationally renowned research, Luminy is also a space for sports and leisure activities, as it is frequented by thousands of students, scientists, Marseille locals and tourists. The science park puts the Parc National des Calanques, which is a unique French heritage in terms of culture, ecology and landscape, at doors of the 2nd city in France.
As one of the first European science parks, Luminy Park is one of the rare French sites to present a range of disciplines, which are sources of wealth and interfaces, that combines life science, physics, mathematics, informatics, chemistry, oceanology, human sciences, sport sciences, management, art, architecture, urbanism… both at the level of teaching and of research. Even within these disciplines, the research areas are quite varied; ranging from immunology, developmental biology, neurobiology to the study of surface materials and even particle physics.
High-level scientific events regularly reunite experts and researchers of international renown. CIRM, one of the oldest and largest world centres for mathematics conferences, receives 3000 delegates per year, also from other disciplines, coming from around world and representing 51 nationalities. In parallel, the promotion of science among the general public and young people is led by teaching and research establishments and by dedicated associations: Tous Chercheurs, Hippocampe-Maths… participate in the dissemination of scientific information and to the influence of this “place of knowledge”.
Built in an original spirit of affiliation between teaching, research and business, Luminy has been able to provide the conditions for the creation, development and implementation of technological companies. Through advocacy and provisions supporting projects, researchers, employees and students of the site have been able to create innovative companies and often make the choice to install them on site, particularly in the 1200m2 biotech nursery which offers shared services, or in locations dedicated to businesses, in proximity t excellent technical support centres and research laboratories.
Students, researchers, teachers, employees… so many different activities for the same common identity: “Luminien”. Coming every day to this place of unspoiled nature, where sometimes it is necessary to slow down to let the squirrels cross, leaves no one indifferent. Former students asked about their time at Luminy all have similar answers: the memory of a beautiful location, unique, where they built their future. Some of them haven’t left and can still be found in laboratories or businesses on the site.
